Apply by Dec. 19 for NCESR 2014 Summer Internship

The Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research announces the Darrell J. Nelson Summer Undergraduate Internship in Energy Sciences Research. Applications are now being accepted for the summer undergraduate internship in energy sciences research. The summer internship is being offered for the first time in the amount up to $5,000 for the summer of 2014.

The internship is named after
Mr. Darrell J. Nelson, who served 41 years on the Custer County Public Power District and Nebraska Public
Power District (NPPD) Boards from 1970-2011, and was an advocate of lifelong learning. In 2005, Mr. Nelson
proposed a partnership between NPPD and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln for the purpose of engaging in
energy sciences research. The following year, the NCESR was created with NPPD’s support.

To be eligible to apply, the undergraduate student must be:
1. pursuing any major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL)
2. in academic good standing as defined in the Academic Services Handbook 1
3. between the sophomore/junior year or the junior/senior year, which is determined by the total
semester hours successfully completed as detailed in the Academic Service Handbook 2
4. have a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or above
Preference will be given to those applicants that have a permanent address, which receives electricity service,
within the area of Nebraska Public Power District as described at: http://www.nppd.com/about-us/who-we-serve/.

Application Requirements. The undergraduate student is responsible to:
1. Complete the application form and items “1.” through “4.” as described under “Part III * Application
Requirements.” All items with an asterisk are required for a valid application.
2. Contact and secure a firm commitment from a faculty member, who agrees to sponsor the application. This
means that the student is required to secure a signed, one-page letter from the faculty member who agrees to
sponsor the student and supervise the energy sciences research work the student will perform throughout the
course of the proposed summer internship.
3. Submit the required information in an organized package. Mail (postmark no later than the submission

The application deadline is December 19, 2013.
Summary of Experience. At the end of the internship, the student will be required to submit a summary to the
sponsoring faculty member. The summary must describe the experience and the accomplishments and/or results
of the energy sciences research work experience. The faculty member will be responsible to submit the student’s
summary along with a brief description of the experience from the sponsor/supervisor’s point of view. The award
will detail the due date the faculty member will submit this information to the NCESR.
