Summer road construction has changed the ways traffic flows around City Campus, with major changes to 16th, 17th and Vine streets, including adding new bicycle lanes, turning formerly one-way streets into two-way streets, and the removing of many traffic signals.
Students are advised to exercise caution as they get used to the new configurations, especially when they are around the College of Engineering complex (Other Hall, Scott Engineering Center and Nebraska Hall) located near the intersection of those streets.
Here is a quick guide to the changes:
*16th Street (from Q to X streets) – The road, formerly three lanes for southbound traffic, is now set up for two-way traffic with single lanes each for southbound and northbound traffic. Stoplights at R and Vine streets have been removed and replaced with all-way stop signs. Pedestrians should be alert to oncoming traffic when crossing 16th Street as many of the pedestrian signals have also been removed.
*17th Street (from R to Vine streets) – Has been reduced to a single lane for one-way, northbound traffic and multiple traffic signals have been replaced with stop signs.
*Vine Street (from 16th Street to Antelope Valley Roadway) – The road, previously two-way for both eastbound and westbound traffic, has been changed to single lanes in both directions with bicycle only lanes created closer to the curbs. Drivers of motorized vehicles are to drive in only the left lanes and must stop and look for bicyclists in the right lanes before turning.
A Nebraska Today article noted minor traffic delays throughout the heart of City Campus and outlined University and City officials' suggestions to drivers on taking alternate alternate routes and avoiding those areas to reduce delays, which have been common along 16th Street between Q and Vine streets.
