Campus deadline for STEM Goldwater Scholarship is Nov. 1

Any College of Engineering students interested in receiving the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship, should submit their applications by Nov. 1. The scholarship supports college expenses up to $7,500 and is open to applicants who are in their sophomore or junior years.

For the purposes of the scholarship, a sophomore is defined as a student having two more years of undergraduate study remaining after the current year.

The Goldwater scholarship, established by the U.S. Congress in 1986, supports promising undergraduates in engineering, mathematics, or the natural sciences. Students must be: US citizens, US nationals or resident aliens, with a high GPA (3.9 and above); a major in engineering, mathematics, or the natural sciences; and planning to pursue a Ph.D. with career plans focused on research. Students must have had significant research experience when they apply.

Students who are interested in the Goldwater must be nominated by the institution and be selected by a campus committee. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is limited to submitting four Goldwater applications.

Although the website indicates that Goldwater will consider applications from students who are pursuing an M.D./Ph.D., Nebraska has not been successful in the past with these applicants.

If students are interested in these awards, they must make an appointment to meet with Laura Damuth, director of National and International Fellowships, to discuss the application and the application process. She can be contacted at ldamuth1@unl.edu.
