This course introduces students to a complex variety of Buddhist traditions from several perspectives that include, but are not limited to, historical, philosophical, contemplative, ritual, and ethical dimensions of Buddhism. The course is divided into five parts. In the first part, we will focus on the figure of the Buddha and his foundational teachings. In the second part, we will study the development of the Buddhist community and early forms of Buddhism. In the third part, we will examine the development of Mahāyāna, the most widespread form of Buddhism. In the fourth part, we will explore Buddhist philosophical systems and tantric Buddhism. Finally, in the fifth part of the course, we will study about ritual, historical, and other aspects of several influential Buddhist traditions.
