Interested in a major that will lead to an amazing career? Consider one of the many teaching majors offered through the College of Education and Human Sciences. Prepare for a career in teaching and you will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning, develop skills in diversity and social justice, and contribute to building strong schools and communities.

CEHS offers several teaching majors from elementary education, secondary education in a variety of subjects, special education, as well as programs in early childhood. Our teaching programs incorporate hands-on learning opportunities including multiple practicum experiences and student teaching. Students interested in pursuing a teaching major should connect early with the College of Education & Human Sciences Academic Advising Center located in 105 Henzlik Hall. Teaching programs often have specific course requirements, including pre-professional coursework and a state test required by the Nebraska Department of Education, that typically should be completed by a student’s third semester at the university.

Students who successfully complete degree requirements will be recommended for a Nebraska teaching certificate. Graduates of CEHS teaching programs quickly find teaching positions in Lincoln, surrounding communities, and throughout Nebraska. Students who plan to teach outside of Nebraska upon completing their degree and being recommended for certification can work with the state agency responsible for teaching licensing.

The salary for teaching is often higher than one might assume. In addition to competitive salaries, teaching positions often have strong benefits packages, including retirement. Students who hope to continue their education beyond the bachelor’s degree may also find tuition support for further education from their school district.
