Abstract: Recent evidence indicates southern heritage landscapes, including plantation sites, are increasingly bringing African-American struggles front and center within the representation of the history of the South and the United States. This presentation, focused on data collected in South Carolina, will examine the oldest and newest plantation tourism sites within the region (Magnolia Plantation and Gardens and McLeod Plantation Historic Site). Utilizing assemblage theory, these two plantation museums offer valuable lessons in the ways that slavery is centered or decentered in the plantation museum assemblage.
