Grant-Project Student Assistant

The Conservation and Survey Division is seeking three undergraduate Geology and/or Natural Resources students to assist in the preservation of geological rock cores at the CSD Geological Sample Repository near Mead, Nebraska. Transportation will be provided from East Campus. This project is grant funded and is estimated to be completed by August 31, 2022.

The CSD Geological Sample Repository collects, curates, and preserves geological samples for present and future research. These unique cores have been subjected to humidity, temperature changes, and being over handled. This project will ensure the preservation of these cores for many more years to come.

Location: University of Nebraska-Lincoln - Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center (ENREC); Near Mead, Nebraska (approximately 40 miles from East Campus).

Hours: Maximum 20 hours per week. A minimum of at least 8 hours per week is preferred when classes are in session. 40 hours per week is available while classes are not in session (e.g. spring break & summer–if enrolled in fall classes). Hours and days are flexible: M-F (occasional Saturdays may be available), 8am – 5pm. Due to the distance, hours worked must be in blocks of a minimum of 4 hours.

Salary: $12/hour

Duties:
•Assist in determining levels of core preservation.
•Photograph geological rock cores.
•Follow set preservation procedures: use HEPA vacuum and brushes to clean rock core, bag/wrap core, transfer core to new containers, label containers.
•Assist with compiling an Excel spreadsheet database.
•Stack and unstack (approximate) 3’ X 2’ and 4’ X 2.5’ core boxes with assistance.

Qualifications/Requirements:
•Must demonstrate a strong work ethic and be reliable.
•Demonstrate a high level of attention to detail with an emphasis on quality and accuracy.
•Able to stand for long periods of time.
•Must adhere to safety protocols.
•Able to lift a minimum of 30 lbs and work in a dusty/dirty environment.

Expected Start & End Dates: December 6, 2021 - expected to end by August 31, 2022.
