Geology Student Spotlight

The Geology Student Spotlight is your opportunity to learn a bit more about one of your fellow Geology majors at UNL. This week, Annie Lammes from Plano, Texas, is in the spotlight.

Name: Annie Lammes
Majors: Geology and Meteorology-Climatology
Year in School: Senior

Where are you from?

I am from Plano, Texas.

What gets you excited about Geology?

I really enjoy the fact that geology ranges from the microscopic to entire mountain ranges. I was so excited at field camp when we were talking about how certain areas formed and the largeness of scale and the length of time it took to create Earth as it currently is amazes me.

Favorite Geology class or instructor so far? Why?

My favorite geology class so far is geochemistry thermodynamics. It was difficult and frustrating at times, but I have always struggled with math and physics and this class was the first time I felt like I was really understanding what I was doing which made it so much fun.

What are you excited about doing after graduation?

I am excited to start grad school next fall. Right now I am in the application process, but I'm excited to find out where I'll be going and the research I'll be doing this time next year!

What is a goal you have accomplished as a Husker?

As a husker, I feel like the biggest goal I accomplished was not giving up. Double majoring was easier than it seemed when I started, but it still felt like climbing a mountain. I'm very happy that I stuck with it and completed both majors even if it took me a little longer than the standard four years.

What do you wish you would have known when you started as a Geology Major that you know now?

I wish I had known about the field trips and field camp when I started geology. They were so much fun, and I am so grateful that we got to go on them, but going into mineralogy and hearing that we would be camping and working in the Black Hills was terrifying given that I was not an outdoor kid. It was overwhelming. After field camp though, I am genuinely excited that a couple of the master's projects I'm looking at involve field work.

What do you hope to cross off your “bucket list” in the next few years?

In the next few years, I want to travel a bit. I've never been outside of the country, and I'd like to see more of the world. Other than that, I'd like to defend my master's thesis.
