Global Experiences Updates

The Global Experiences Offices (GEO) has lots of ways to help you gather information to help you make your decision about where and when to studying abroad. The deadline for summer applications is February 15th, and the deadline for going abroad for the fall semester is April 1st!

• Study abroad deadlines are approaching for summer 2025! If you are thinking about studying abroad, start with this video! Top 6 Questions Students Ask When They're Getting Started With Studying Abroad
• The next best step in your plan to study abroad is to attend a Huskers Abroad 101 info session, which is a 30-minute drop-in opportunity that Global Experiences offers every Tuesday at 3pm in LPH 07 and every Wednesday at 1pm in LPH 101. Huskers Abroad 102 is also a really great info session, and it walks you through options for funding your study abroad experiences. Huskers Abroad 102 is offered every week on Monday at 1pm in LPH 101.

• Explore possible programs you can apply for at the UNL program search website. You’ll find faculty-led programs, exchange programs, and more.
• If you’re ready to talk more in depth about program selection or have lots of questions, you can set up advising with Alicia (Global Experiences Grad Assistant) or Renae (Global Experiences Coordinator).

This introductory workshop takes you through program types, experience types, and the steps to take to plan your global experiences.

Learn about all the ways to fund your Global Experience! From scholarships to federal aid, we'll cover deadlines, timelines, and other steps you should take when considering how to pay for your program.

Iceland Eco-Exploration and Sustainability Info Session
Students will spend a 12-day period onsite exploring Iceland for an immersive experience learning about the country’s human and physical geographies including sustainabilities. This course is designed to get students outside, learn methods, gain new perspectives, practice leadership, think critically, and learn how to navigate different cultures.

Primatology Field Methodologies in Madagascar Info Session
Ihofa Forest is a large parcel of intact tropical moist forest with 13 species of lemur, among the most in a single location in Madagascar. Students will be allowed to explore the forest in both diurnal and nocturnal settings. There are bamboo stands, wetlands, and montane forests in this location, so students can experience different habitats and how methodologies need to be adjusted based on the landscape in which a study will be conducted.

Japanese Religions and Popular Culture Info Session
Through site visits, the course focuses on Buddhist and Shinto traditions since antiquity and makes an inquiry as to how Japan’s consumer society interact with them to build popular cultural contents and mercantile activities. In other words, going beyond our theoretical understanding of religions in Japan, the course allows you to explore the ways Buddhism and Shinto are consumed and integrated into people’s quotidian life environments. To this end, the course aims to promote your understanding of the cultural norms and notion of religions that significantly differ from North American counterparts.

Global Snacks for Study Abroad Day
Stop by the LPH Atrium to try snacks and refreshments from around the world, learn more about studying abroad, meet Global Experiences staff, and learn who won the Global Affairs Photo Contest!

Scholarships from the Global Experiences Office
Global Experiences Scholarship – for students planning to study abroad within the next 3 years, not for students studying abroad in the next term. Due date: February 15th
Edythe Wiebers Application - for students studying any language. Due date: February 15th
MAPS Scholarship - Once a student applies for a program, they automatically receive a MAPS Application Form. Completing this application will allow an applicant to be considered for at least 12 study abroad scholarships. The MAPS application deadline aligns with the program application deadlines of February 15th for summer programs and April 1st for fall or academic year programs.

External Scholarship
Boren Awards – Prestigious language study in non-Western European countries
Critical Language Scholarship – intensive overseas summer language learning for languages deemed critical by the US Department of State.
Gilman Scholarship – for Pell-eligible students to study abroad
