38 Huskers recognized as awardees in competitive national scholarships

38 University of Nebraska-Lincoln students have been recognized as new awardees for multiple prestigious scholarships.

The awards include: the Fulbright Program, Truman Scholarship, Boren Awards, Goldwater Scholarship, Gilman Scholarship and the Critical Language Scholarships. Meet the awardees and learn more about each scholarship below.

Six Huskers win Fulbright awards
Six University of Nebraska–Lincoln students and alumni have earned Fulbright awards for the 2019-20 academic year, and three have been chosen as alternates. The finalists include Marnee Roundtree, Sarah Vrtiska, Allison Black, Katie Batenhorst, Sofia Cranley and Jenna Brende. Lee-Ann Sims, Christopher Etheredge and Jenna Purdy are alternates.

Johnson is Nebraska U's 17th Truman Scholar
A meeting request from the chancellor turned into an educational opportunity for Husker Emily Johnson. Expecting to meet Chancellor Ronnie Green’s leadership team on April 8, the junior and president of the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska walked into Canfield Administration building and was greeted by exceptional news — she’d been selected as Dear old Nebraska U’s 17th Harry S. Truman scholar.

Kuzela earns Boren Scholarship to study in Kyrgyzstan
Miranda Kuzela of Bellevue, a University of Nebraska–Lincoln senior majoring in Russian, political science, global studies and Spanish, has earned a Boren Scholarship to study abroad this summer and fall. Kuzela will attend the School of Russian and Asian Studies’ Central Asian Studies Program in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to improve her Russian language skills.

3 Huskers named Goldwater Scholars
University of Nebraska–Lincoln STEM students had a strong showing in this year’s Goldwater Scholarship competition. Of the four applications the university submitted, three students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields were selected as scholars. Nebraska’s Goldwater recipients are juniors Liam Kruse, Lauren Lesiak and Mark Nail.

22 Huskers earn Gilman Scholarship to study or intern abroad
Twenty-two University of Nebraska-Lincoln undergraduate students have earned Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships to study or intern abroad in fall 2018, spring 2019 and summer 2019. The Gilman Scholarship Program supports underrepresented undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints, and aims to encourage students to study and intern in a diverse array of countries and to study languages, especially critical need languages.

5 Huskers receive Critical Language Scholarships
Five University of Nebraska–Lincoln students have been awarded Critical Language Scholarships to study a language abroad this summer. The students are Alexander Christensen, Liam McChristian, Jared Noetzel, Gregory Tracey and Cooper Wright.
