Should I add anyone and everyone on LinkedIn?
Similar to user requests on all social media platforms, it’s a personal choice. Before you click accept, review the user’s profile. Ask yourself, why might this person want to connect with me? What value can they bring to my network? Are they alumni?
Who should I connect with?
Think about people who are in your professional and personal networks, industry leaders, local community members, conference participants, co-workers, graduate school classmates, and alumni. How might these individuals be able to help you or how can you help them? Remember, when you ask to connect with others they are likely to view your profile. Make sure your profile is updated.
Should I send a message with my request?
It is encouraged. Most people are more likely to accept your request if they know why you want to connect. Be concise and professional.
Are there other ways to build my network on LinkedIn?
Yes! Here are a couple of suggestions.
1. Join groups- This is a great way to interact with others who have similar interests as you. Groups provide you with access to various types of people. Did you know that you can direct message people in groups you are part of whereas you may not be able to send them a message via their personal profile until they accept your request?
2. Use the Alumni and People tabs on school and company pages. For example, search University of Nebraska-Lincoln. On the left side, click on Alumni. Use the filters such as “where they live”, “what they do” or “where they studied” to target your search. This is a great tool to use for informational interviewing.
We're connected. Now what?
Simply adding people to your network will not help you build a relationship with them. Interact with them. Like or comment on other's posts. Share articles and content. Provide updates about yourself, team, or employer.
