Making the Most of Your Summer

Even if your summer has been altered by COVID-19, you can still make progress toward your professional goals! Here are 5 tips to make the most of your summer:

1. Take summer courses. UNL is working to transition all summer courses online and add additional summer course options. If you are not able to work, getting ahead on your course plan may be a good alternative.

2. Read. Create a summer reading list with books about general business topics, your industry of interest, or professional development topics. Ask faculty or mentors for recommendations.

3. Network. Schedule virtual informational interviews with individuals who work in careers of interest. Use LinkedIn or Husker Connect to find potential contacts. Be active on LinkedIn by liking, commenting, and posting. (If you don't have a LinkedIn profile, now is a great time to create one!)

4. Jobcraft. If your work this summer is unrelated to your future career goals, work with your supervisor to brainstorm additional responsibilities that are related.

5. Upgrade your skills. Use this time to upgrade your skillset. LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, EdX, Microsoft, and many other platforms offer free online courses. Bonus: Use your informational interviews to identify skills that are particularly sought-after in your future career.
