Thanks to the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska (ASUN), all UNL faculty, staff, and students now have free digital access to the New York Times (NYT). For UNL faculty interested in incorporating NYT content into their curriculum, a free companion website called The New York Times in Education is available.
The Times in Education website has three major features:
- Sixteen curated collections of articles which connect the news to specific areas of study, ranging from American Government to Writing & English Composition.
- A searchable collection of "General Instructional Strategies" with examples of how faculty have integrated New York Times content into an assignment or overall course.
- The ability to bookmark any of the articles or instructional strategies in your account for later viewing.
Each area of study has designated faculty contributors who regularly add new entries. For example, Fatma Müge Göçek, Ph. D. Professor, Sociology and Women’s Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, curates the “Sociology” collection, and Brian Arbour, Associate Professor at John Jay College, CUNY curates the “Campaigns & Elections” collection.
In addition to a link to a New York Times article, each entry includes a synopsis or analysis of the article, classroom discussion prompts or activities, and links to related articles. The collections can be browsed or searched by subject and/or desired learning outcome. A “Resources” link ties the different subject areas to relevant columns, videos, and blogs on NYTimes.com, as well as suggesting columnists to follow for that area.
To access the content of The New York Times in Education site, you must create a separate registration from your NYTimes.com account. The account information (official UNL email address and password) can be the same as your NYTimes.com account, but each website has separate logins. When setting up an account, there is the option to sign up for weekly digests for any of the areas of study that might be of interest.
