11/19: Upcoming Handshake training could help increase your applicant pool

Thursday, November 19, 2020 | 2-3PM CST via Zoom

If your department or office is looking to reach a broader demographic the next time you hire a graduate assistant or postdoctoral fellow, consider using Handshake. All UNL students and alumni have access to this platform, which functions as a career management system. Additionally, there are more than 1,000 institutions across the country that use Handshake if you want to expand your search beyond the UNL community.

As the N2025 Strategic Plan moves forward, Handshake allows campus organizations to see who is applying to posted positions and better understand how to promote inclusive excellence when hiring candidates.

Using Handshake to hire graduate assistants and postdocs would support the N2025 aim in innovating student experiences that prepare graduates to be life-long learners and contributors to the workforce in Nebraska and the world by providing a platform to:

  • Recruit, develop, and compensate a competitive and highly competent community of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows
  • Recruit and develop diverse world-class researchers, scholars, artists, and staff and provide them with strong institutional and community support
  • Develop and employ innovative approaches for recruiting, enrolling, educating, and retaining a diverse student body
  • Prepare and align university staff to be connected and engaged in the student experience as well as the recruitment and retention of a diverse student body
If you are interested in learning more about how you could utilize Handshake to increase the number of applicants for your next job posting, University Career Services is hosting a training on Thursday, November 19 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. CST called Professional Development: Handshake Basics, Best Practices, Tips & Tricks.

They will also host Handshake Demo Days virtually in January, which is geared toward on-campus employers. If you would like to learn more about how you can make the most of this platform to ensure you are hiring the best candidates for your open positions, more information can be found through Career Services.
