Each semester, Graduate Studies offers a range of professional development workshops focused on enhancing skills in and fine-tuning your approach to the job search, communicating your research, and inclusive teaching practices.

  • Writing a Diversity Statement*

    Diversity statements are increasingly being asked for by academic hiring committees. This workshop will provide an introduction to writing diversity statements. This discussion will cover the basic components of these documents and also help graduate students start to draft their own diversity statement to use when they apply for jobs.

    You spent hours perfecting your resume and pouring over the application. Now make sure you know what to say when your hard work pays off and it’s time to schedule your interview.

    Join the interviewing skills workshop to walk through the interview process from start to finish. This session will focus on interviewing in a variety of fields and provide some common interview questions and help you prepare to answer them.

    Learning objectives are basic statements that explain to you and your students what the goals of that class are for that class day and course as a whole. Learning objectives guide your lesson planning, teaching and assessment. This workshop will help TAs with writing effective learning objectives for their classes.

  • Presenting your Research to Lay Audiences

    This workshop will help prepare you for presenting your research on audiences of those outside your department or non-academics. This will help prepare you for presenting at Student Research Days or sharing your research with a variety of audiences. Participants will have an opportunity to practice describing their work in to non-experts.

  • Sustainable Writing Practices

    It can be challenging to maintain your motivation over the course of an extensive writing project such as a thesis or dissertation. Join the Writing Center for a conversation on developing sustainable writing practices, including how to break daunting writing tasks down into manageable ones, set achievable goals, and develop a writing practice that will sustain you through your degree program and beyond.

    This session will allow participants to engage in discussion and conversation around case studies focusing on inclusive teaching issues. Inclusive Teaching is a concept that focuses on a variety of issues centered on teaching in a way to allow all students to participate equitably in the class. This session will be held in person and participants navigate case studies on ethical cases related in inclusive teaching in the classroom.
