College life is busy, and it’s easy to let health routines slide to save time. However, neglecting these basics can lead to lasting health issues. Here are some common health mistakes seen by the University Health Center providers and tips to overcome them.

1. Dental care

The mistake: Skipping out on brushing and flossing.

The solution: “There are up to 400 types of bacteria, not to mention viruses and fungi, that live in the human mouth,” says Amber Duey, dental hygienist. “Brushing and flossing daily protects your whole body, as well as your teeth and gums.”

Make brushing your teeth a part of your morning and bedtime routine. Flossing is a hard habit to establish for a lot of people. Start small by keeping floss picks in your backpack or purse to floss at least once a day. Any flossing is better than none at all!

Scheduling routine dental exams at least once a year, twice a year is even better. You can call 402.472.7495 to make an appointment with the University Health Center dental clinic.

2. Physical therapy

The mistake: Skipping physical therapy after an injury or surgery.

The solution: “A thorough evaluation from a movement professional is a great idea after any injury or surgery,” says Wakon Lee, physical therapist. Think of physical therapy as both a bridge back to the things you want to do as well as a way to prevent further issues. Even minor surgeries, like a knee scope, can cause changes. For example, after a seemingly minor knee surgery, your quadriceps can lose strength and/or coordination. Without addressing these changes, you might start moving in ways that add stress to other parts of your body and you may even notice returning to higher-level activities is harder than expected.

A 15 to 30 minute discussion, known as a consult, with a licensed physical therapist is covered by student fees at the University Health Center. A full evaluation with follow-up treatments is billed through your insurance.

3. Primary care

The mistake: “Toughing it out” through illness.

The solution: College students often push through illness, thinking a little rest isn’t worth missing class. “Listen to your body,” says Britt Otte, RN, and clinic manager. “Prioritizing recovery can keep you on track both physically and academically.”

Rest and basic care can often prevent illness from worsening. If you need additional guidance for certain symptoms, you can call the phone nurse who is available 24/7, or schedule an appointment with the health center by calling 402.472.5000.

Maintaining your health in college can be challenging, but you can’t succeed academically if you’re not feeling your best. By taking small steps to avoid common health mistakes, you’re setting yourself up for a healthier future. Remember, the University Health Center is here to support you every step of the way!
