Tillie Stanton is a master’s student in Education Administration specializing in Student Affairs. They are well-acquainted with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL), having completed their undergraduate studies here. Tillie decided to pursue their graduate degree at UNL because of the vibrant community they built and experienced during their undergraduate years.
They aimed to strengthen those connections and leverage the opportunities offered by UNL.
Throughout their undergraduate experience, Tillie received invaluable guidance from student affairs professionals. These mentors encouraged and supported them, inspiring Tillie to pursue a career in student affairs to help others in the same way. Now, as a graduate student, Tillie is committed to making a positive impact at UNL.
As an openly queer leader, Tillie provides crucial representation and works to foster a warm, safe, and inclusive atmosphere at the Gender and Sexuality Center. Their role includes managing social media platforms and sending newsletters to promote events, services, and resources. From hosting drag shows to maintaining the Lavender Closet, Tillie’s favorite part of their job is seeing the joy and relief students feel when they find a space where they are supported and celebrated.
In addition to their marketing efforts, Tillie actively advocates for student success and safety in higher education. They make space for queer voices and experiences, highlighting perspectives that are often overlooked. They view their very existence in an explicitly queer space as a form of activism and resistance, working tirelessly to help students feel safe and empowered.
Tillie also balances their responsibilities by maintaining open communication with undergraduate leaders, allowing them to take ownership of tasks while providing guidance and support. This collaborative approach ensures that leaders feel both supported and empowered.
When asked about their proudest achievement, Tillie reflects on their ability to not only survive but also thrive through difficult times, achieving significant goals along the way. They hope to be remembered for their kindness, believing that compassion is essential because everyone carries unseen burdens.
Fun Fact: Tillie met Taylor Swift at the age of six, back when Taylor had only two songs on country radio!
And one thing Tillie can’t live without? Dr. Pepper!
