Many of us make being healthier a priority at the start of the new year. Set yourself up for success with these tips from the University Health Center.
Schedule an annual exam.
An annual check-up might not sound exciting, but it’s a great way to start fresh. Your provider can help you stay on top of things like vaccines, blood pressure and cholesterol. Screenings during annual exams can help catch issues early on, and your provider can give you advice to prevent them from becoming bigger health issues later on.
Upgrade your meals.
What you eat has a huge impact on your health, how you feel and even how well you sleep. Healthy eating isn’t about finding the trendiest diet. Instead, focus on balance and knowing how much you’re eating. Need a little help getting started? Your first nutrition counseling visit with our registered dietitian is covered by student fees.
Commit to exercising.
Whether you hit the rec center, join an intramural sport or just walk the long way to your next class, find a type of exercise you enjoy and actually schedule it into your daily calendar. Aim for two and a half hours of activity a week—that’s less than 25 minutes a day. Keep yourself accountable by downloading an app to track your activity or finding a workout buddy.
Get your zzzz’s.
College life is busy, but sleep is non-negotiable. Try to get at least seven hours a night. Good sleep improves memory, elevates your mood and boosts your immune system. Struggling to wind down at night? Check out these tips on sleep hygiene.
Break bad habits.
College is about growth, and sometimes that means rethinking habits like vaping, binge drinking and eating disorders. These habits might feel small now, but they add up. There are resources on campus to guide you.
