On April 29, 2025, the Biochemistry Graduate Students Association (BCGSA) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln hosted Dr. Melanie Simpson, Professor and Department Head of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry at North Carolina State University, for the 2025 Ackerson Memorial Lecture.
This annual lecture commemorates Dr. Clifton W. Ackerson, who served in the Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition at UNL from 1922 to 1965. Dr. Simpson’s lecture, titled “Targeted Control of Prostate Tumor Androgen Response Through a Novel Sensory Node,” was held in Room E103 of the Beadle Center and drew a broad audience of students, faculty, and researchers interested in cancer biology, hormone signaling, and translational biochemistry.
Dr. Simpson, a former member of the UNL biochemistry faculty, was instrumental in shaping key academic initiatives during her tenure, including the launch of the Complex Biosystems Ph.D. program and UNL's participation in the NIH-funded Molecular Mechanisms of Disease (MMOD) project. Her research into hyaluronan signaling and prostate cancer progression continues to influence the field nationally.
Her return to Lincoln was met with visible excitement from faculty, staff, and students alike. The visit provided a chance for many to reconnect with a respected former colleague and mentor. She engaged in one-on-one meetings with several faculty members, and had a particularly meaningful meeting with Dr. Donald Becker, current Chair of Biochemistry, with whom she collaborated during her years at UNL. “Melanie’s return felt like a homecoming,” noted Dr. Becker. “She helped build the T32 training program (MMOD) among other things, from which several cohorts of students have benefitted.”
The day’s events also included lunch with biochemistry graduate students and a welcome reception in the Beadle Atrium, both organized by BCGSA. Students appreciated the opportunity to speak with Dr. Simpson about her career trajectory, scientific vision, and advice for early-career researchers. The program was coordinated by Adedotun Adefolalu (BCGSA Ackerson Lecture Official) and Tyrell Rossman (President), whose planning, aided by other BCGSA officials and Biochemistry staff, ensured a meaningful and memorable experience.
Dr. Simpson’s seminar was more than a scientific presentation—it was a celebration of legacy, mentorship, and the enduring spirit of the academic community.
