Tusker Slims Down For Summer

Tusker has served the NU research community well over the last 6 years, providing large memory space (thus the name) and over 250M CPU hours (see the graph above). While it is still functioning well and is projected to be in service for at least the next academic year, it is now entirely out of warranty. As Tusker ages it has been forced to go on a diet.

Over the last academic year, HCC has added 94 new nodes to Crane that contain the same amount of memory as Tusker but with current Intel Xeon processors and updated Omnipath interconnect (called CraneOPA nodes). This addition has displaced 24 of Tusker’s nodes, which are less energy efficient. Users may notice these changes as less cores available from the general Tusker batch queue and more cores available on Crane.

The new nodes have been very popular. However, most of them have been purchased or leased by research groups at this time. Further additions are possible later this summer, depending upon interest. If you would support the purchase of more CraneOPA nodes, please contact David Swanson at david.swanson@unl.edu.
