AFA has selected an outstanding collection of 40 collegiate men and women to travel to Washington, D.C., to participate in National Ag Day, March 8. National Ag Day falls during National Ag Week, during which producers, agricultural associations, corporations, universities, government agencies and countless others from across America gather to recognize and celebrate the abundance provided by agriculture.
Two CASNR students are among the participants: Bryce Vaughn and Matraca Meyer.
Through its partnership with the Agriculture Council of America, AFA is able to offer students the opportunity to share the message of agriculture by visiting Capitol Hill and meeting directly with legislators and advisors from the students’ home states. Students also have the chance to participate in training sessions to help them better understand policy and regulation impacts to agriculture, attend an Ag Day luncheon on Capitol Hill and network with other students passionate about agriculture and the legislative process.
“Linking college men and women with learning experiences that will enhance their skills and help them prepare to be pace setters in their careers is at the core of AFA’s mission” said Russ Weathers, President and CEO of Agriculture Future of America. “AFA is extremely pleased to be a part of this partnership that allows students to spread the positive message of agriculture and learn about U.S. policy and regulation as it relates to agriculture.”
This year, as a result of close collaboration with the National Teach Ag Campaign, FFA and the Agriculture Council of America, three AFA Ag Day delegates majoring in agriculture education will take part in the first ever National Teach Ag Day event. During this event, three AFA students, along with three National FFA delegates and three mentor teachers, will prepare and teach an agriscience lesson in a D.C. middle school on National Ag Day, Thursday, March 8. Their activity and the agricultural education profession will also be highlighted to legislators and industry representatives at the Ag Day luncheon on Thursday.
The National Ag Day campaign, hosted by the Agriculture Council of America, encourages every American to understand how food and fiber products are produced, value the essential role of agriculture in maintaining a strong economy and appreciate the role agriculture plays in providing safe, abundant and affordable products.
