Cardiovascular diseases or illnesses that affect the heart are the leading cause of death globally. Most cardiovascular diseases can be prevented when you create heart-healthy habits.
The medical experts at the University Health Center share six tips for a heart-healthy lifestyle:
1. Learn your health history: Talking to your family about their heart disease history can help you know your risks, as some heart conditions may be genetic.
2. Eat a healthy diet: Making simple tweaks to your diet can improve heart health.
3. Get active: Find an exercise you enjoy and incorporate it into your routine.
4. Quit smoking: Avoid using tobacco and secondhand smoke.
5. Relax: Get enough rest every day and reduce your overall stress.
6. See a health care provider: Regular checkups are important to monitor your heart and overall health
The University Health Center has partnered with departments across campus for a week of heart-healthy events called “Love Your Heart” to encourage students to take care of their heart health. You can attend free classes at Campus Recreation or get a wellness profile and free breakfast at the health center.
