Are you an international student interested in applying for Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT)? If so, make sure you are eligible and squared away to apply, as students should apply EARLY in their final semester, with or without a job offer.

Optional Practical Training (OPT), is off-campus employment authorization granted by USCIS for F-1 students who have maintained their F-1 status, to gain work experience in their academic major (not for degree minors). While on OPT, you are still considered an F-1 student!

If you have multiple majors listed on your I-20, then your OPT may relate to ANY of your majors and your OPT must be commensurate with your education level (equal in measure or extent). Qualified students are eligible for a total of 12 months of OPT for each successive degree level as an F-1 student.

If you complete your program requirements this semester, you could be eligible to apply for Post-Completion OPT. More information regarding the timeline and the process can be found on ISSO’s website: “OPT Application Process” linked here.

Keep an eye out for information regarding in-person OPT sessions that we will be having this month.
