Happy Spring Break

Spring Break is a time for students to unwind, see new locations, and take a vacation from school! For international students, traveling during this time requires additional planning to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Here are some tips to prepare for your Spring Break adventures:

1. Plan Your Destination and Itinerary (Hopefully this has been done already!)

Choose your destination, consider flights, transportation, and accommodations, and start early to save money. Popular Spring Break destinations include beaches, national parks, and major cities. If you're looking for a short break, the ISSO is organizing a day trip to Kansas City on March 15 - visit this page for more information!

2. Check Visa and Travel Documents

Ensure that your visa and immigration documents are up to date. If you plan to travel outside the U.S., visit the ISSO or set up an appointment to discuss your travel plans. Carry important documents (even if you’re going to a different state in the U.S.) including:

- Valid passport with U.S. visa & destination visa (if applicable). Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your return date.

- I-20 with a travel signature from an ISSO representative.

3. Budget and Expenses

Set a spending limit for transportation, lodging, food, and entertainment. Look for student discounts to cut costs.

4. Health and Safety Precautions

Purchase travel insurance. Carry essential medications. Be aware of local safety guidelines. Stay in safe areas, especially at night. Stay connected - share your travel plans with a friend/family, and have a working phone plan or SIM card for emergencies.

5. Pack Smart

Check the weather forecast and pack accordingly. Bring comfortable clothing, essential travel items, and any documents needed for your trip. If traveling by air, follow airline baggage rules to avoid extra fees.

6. Be Aware of the Local and Legal Differences

Different destinations have different laws and cultural norms. Research local customs, laws, and regulations to avoid misunderstandings. Respect local customs and follow legal guidelines to ensure a trouble-free trip.

7. Know Emergency Contacts

Save important contact numbers, including:

- Family and friends

- ISSO: isso@unl.edu / 402-472-0324

- UNL Police department: 402-472-2222

- Local emergency services at your destination

Spring Break is a time for fun, but it’s important to stay responsible. Avoid risky behavior, be mindful of your surroundings, and always have a backup plan in case of unexpected situations.
