Professor of journalism Maria Marron was honored with the Donna Allen Award for Feminist Advocacy by the Commission on the Status of Women, during the annual (virtual) convention of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication's (AEJMC).

Marron was nominated and ultimately received the award for her commitment to feminist-based research as evident in her two recent books, Misogyny and Media in the Age of Trump (2019), and Misogyny across Global Media (2021). A longtime member of the Commission on the Status of Women, Marron was editor of the commission’s newsletter, Women’s Voices. Her advocacy for the inclusion of journalism/mass communications programs representative of greater diversity in the Carnegie-Knight Deans Group led to the inclusion of women and minority leaders following successful motions by AEJMC and the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Nominating her for the award, a doctoral student who contributed to Misogyny across Global Media, noted that the book has received extensive praise from transnational feminist media scholars. “As a proud contributor, I can speak to my first-hand appreciation of her editorial eye, diligence, and patience with young scholars, such as myself,” the student wrote.

Donna Allen was the founder of the Women's Institute for Freedom of the Press in Washington, D.C. The award honors feminist media activism and the promotion of the rights of women and minorities at a global level.

The Commission on the Status of Women encourages diverse research on the promotion of women in journalism and mass communications in order to balance inequality and promote diversity in academia.

Marron was recognized at a virtual celebration on Monday, July 26, 2021.
