Description: Position Summary:

Interns assist with the production of Performance Today®, American Public Media’s flagship classical music program, which airs daily throughout the United States and is also available as audio on the series’ website.

Interns are assigned three central tasks—logging, quality control (“QC”), and updating the shared document that maps and informs PT’s daily production—with other duties as assigned. When logging, interns audition, assess, and time live concert material, and catalogue the assorted metadata into the MusicMaster database.
QC tasks include close listening to help gauge whether or not performances are suitable for broadcast to a large national audience and assisting audio engineers with the organization and preparation of live concert audio. Interns have the opportunity for basic training in a variety of areas including: audio editing (ProTools, Netia, Dalet), audio engineering, web editing, script writing, programming, and feature production.
This position will have access to in-studio performances by musicians from around the world as well as daily editorial meetings.

Position Responsibilities:

• Audition and accurately log concert metadata into the MusicMaster catalogue database;
• Assist audio engineers with the preparation and processing of live concert audio for broadcast;
• Log interview tape and transcribe live interviews;
• Assist with program research on music and guests;
• Assist with the recording of in-studio performances;
• Train and support new interns, including one’s direct successor;
• Other tasks as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

• Preference given to students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or who have graduated within 2 years from the start of the internship.
• Broadcast and/or other media experience is a plus, but not required.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

• Demonstrated interest in, knowledge of, and passion for classical music;
• Ability to write, meet deadlines, and work independently;
• Ability to learn new computer programs upon request;
• Close, accurate attention to detail;
• Willingness, when appropriate, to offer editorial critique, support, ideas, and suggestions;
• Ability to transcribe and process related concert information (“metadata”);
• An alert and resourceful approach to production adjustments under deadline.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

• College or graduate degree preferred;
• Engineering and recording experience is a plus, but not required.

Compensation/Schedule:

Performance Today® internships are part-time (15-20 hours/week) and last from 6 months to 1 year (maximum). We will accept applications year-round. This internship is compensated at $12.00 per hour. Bus pass or parking reimbursement is also available. College students are encouraged, but not required, to take the internship for course credit.

• Working Conditions: Moderate noise level, occasional exposure to prevalent weather conditions.

American Public Media internships are part-time. Interns will be compensated on an hourly basis. Our offices are located in downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis. Relocation allowance is not available. Parking or bus pass reimbursed.
