Summary: This reporter will thrive and deliver on the news of the day, writing and producing compelling content for our specific audiences for online and print. No day is like the one before it, and the successful candidate looks forward to the variety that comes with an unpredictable news cycle. The reporter will be versatile and ready to shift from a police story to a protest to any other news of the day with ease.
This reporter’s smartphone is as important as his or her notebook – it allows him or her to shoot quick, on-scene or look-live video, record interviews, shoot and email photos and push updates via twitter and email.
We’re looking for a quick-thinking – but accurate – reporter who can file breaking news (remotely if need) and then come back with context on the same story for print the next day.
This reporter will be part of the team that ensures RGJ.com is the authority on local breaking news and that is pushing sufficient updates, videos and tweets throughout the day. This position is a day-side shift that includes weekends.
Required skills:
Superior news judgment.
Ability to shift with ease between different media platforms
Superior writing abilities – especially on deadline.
Web, social media savvy.
Sophisticated understanding of print and online audiences and the differences between the two.
Available and willing to meet the scheduling requirements for news coverage.
Responsibilities:
Production of daily digital and print content. This includes re-writing press releases, responding to breaking news, covering the news of the day and other stories.
This reporter is expected to produce daily content for the Web site and print. This content is likely more enterprising and planned in advance with this reporter’s editor.
Monitor Twitter, blogs, other web sites, etc. for breaking news and competitive stories. Contribute to the digital conversation and coverage through social media.
Understand the RGJ.com’s goals and find ways to achieve them.
Provide daily multimedia content for site through video, photo galleries of news events using iPhone and other tools. Exact number to be determined with team editor.
