Important deadlines coming up for scholarships, fellowships and awards

ADDY® AWARDS

The ADDY Awards deadline is just around the corner (next week!) and we would love to see our great students clean up at the ADDYs.

This year, Valerie Jones will oversee our student entries and help students with their work.

To ease the burden, CoJMC is able to cover the $35 entry fee. The budget is limited, however, so we can only submit the best work.

Here's how it works:

* Please have work submitted to VALERIE (emailed or put in her mailbox; valeriejones@unl.edu) NO LATER THAN 10:00 am on Nov. 13. The ADDYs deadline is Nov. 15.

* She'll review it with a colleague and work with a grad student to coordinate submission of the work. All work ultimately has to be both printed and uploaded to the entry site by the student.

* Categories include: radio, TV, copywriting, digital advertising, consumer/trade pub, newspaper, out of home, sales promotion, collateral material, and more.

Washington Media Scholars Program

The Washington Media Scholars Foundation is offering an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., for Media Scholars Week, where finalists are introduced to dozens of nationally recognized media industry leaders. On the final full day, each finalist team presents their media plan to a panel of judges. At week’s end, professionals recognize the finalists and celebrate the winners at a Networking Reception held at the Newseum.

By Nov. 13, applicants should submit application online at http://mediascholars.org/media-fellows-program/application/ with the following:

* A proposal that articulates career goals, course load and financial need in 500 words or less (double spaced). Proposals should include biographical information, statement of financial need, planned course load, career goals and a statement of affirmation

* One letter of recommendation

Requirements:

* College juniors and seniors in good academic standing are invited to apply.

* Open to full-time degree seeking students whose major or minor prepares them for a career in strategic public policy advertising research, management, planning and buying. These include, but are not limited to, mass communications, journalism, marketing (business or mass communications), and political science.

* Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their major concentration.

* Graduate students are not eligible to enter the Media Fellows Program.

ACES Education Fund Scholarship

The American Copy Editors Society Education Fund is offering four scholarships of $1,000 each and one of $2,500. The five awards will be given to college juniors, seniors and graduate students.

By Nov. 15, applicants should email Alex Cruden, the Fund vice president, at alex@copydesk.org with the following attachments:

* A résumé, including significant activities and honors that relate to editing.

* A brief essay, up to 500 words (and briefer is fine), on the aspects of copy editing that are and will be most important in a multimedia world.

* Optional: As many as six headlines you have written. Send these as a PDF, screengrab or other verifiable form that includes at least the first several paragraphs of the text that appeared with the headline. Or you can send a link, as long as the link will operate through the judging process. The headlines can be from any print or online publication, including student-run, as well as headlines done for class assignments.

* Three references, including their phone numbers and email addresses, from supervisors and/or faculty members, including at least one from a person with whom you have worked in a professional capacity (part-time is fine).
