Spend the summer in NYC with NYU!

Spend this summer in the lively and trendy East Village, exploring your interest in journalism and delving into the exciting lifestyle that is uniquely New York. Treat yourself to the ultimate New York-centric journalism experience, where you’ll focus on how the best do it as you learn how to – or improve the way – you do it yourself.

This summer, we are offering eight stimulating classes that focus on reporting and reviewing the style, culture, and happenings of one of the world’s most exhilarating cities.

With classes taking place Tuesday through Thursday, you’ve got long weekends to further explore everything New York has to offer. Each class has its own time slot, allowing you to take a couple of complementary courses..

Among our offerings this summer, we are featuring a course on reporting the style of New York, taught by William Van Meter, who is a regular contributor to the New York Times Style section and writes for Harper’s Bazaar and the Wall Street Journal, among others. Other courses feature food, pop music and culture, taught by NYU’s world-class faculty and working industry professionals.

Report NY Sessions 1 & 2: 2:00 – 4:00PM
Cover everything from breaking news to pressing social issues and entertainment reviews in this reporting immersion experience.

Eat NY Sessions 1 & 2: 12:00 – 2:00PM
Dive deeply into the inner workings of the great food of NYC – workshop your writing, hear guests speak and take field trips, all to build your confidence as a reporter and writer!

Style NYSessions 1 & 2: 4:00 – 6:00PM
Try your hand at spotting and reporting on New York style. Study the best of New York’s style writers and jump into the New York fashion world.

Pop NYSessions 1 & 2: 6:00 – 8:00PM
Explore the fast-changing world of pop-music journalism. Study approaches to writing concert and album reviews, interviewing artists, covering music news (especially in blog form) and tracking trends.

Culture VultureSession 2: 10:00 – 12:00PM
Inhale NYC’s culture – art, film, theater, books, TV – and learn to write about it as an art reporter and cultural critic.

Writing the BodySession 1: 10:00 – 12:00PM
A course for everyone with a body – a female body, a male body, or a body of uncertain gender. Read a wide variety of individual body-centered accounts and cultural analyses.

Personal EssaySession 2: 2:00 – 4:00PM
Do you have a story to tell, an original voice? An application essay to write? This class will help nurture your voice, shape your stories and sharpen your skills.

The Story We See June 2-26, Three hours each day, TBD
Enhance your portfolio and gain hands-on, marketable skills in today’s workplace. Immerse yourself in this environment that recreates the intense atmosphere of a real newsroom.
