Rural Futures Summer Internship

Nebraska Rural Futures Internship This eight-week summer internship experience combines leadership, service and entrepreneurship opportunities along with significant professional development and networking. Successful applicants will work with the office of Student Involvement, the Center for Civic Engagement, the Heartland Center for Leadership Development, the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program, the Nebraska Human Resources Institute and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) to formulate progressive solutions for rural Nebraska communities.

Major Elements of the Experience:
Summer Pre-Service Training – Participate in a three-week pre-session training series that focuses on Service Learning, Community Development, Leadership, Clues to Rural Community Survival and Entrepreneurship. The training will include examples from community development method and theory, action research, evaluation, leadership, the Community Capitals framework and field methods in Anthropology.

Summer “Serviceship” - A combination of internship and service, the “serviceship” will include student teams of two assisting a Nebraska community with a project specified by the community leadership team (i.e. community development officer, chamber of commerce member, extension educator and/or agricultural education instructor) as well as community service activities outside of the serviceship project. Communities will apply to participate, agree to provide free housing and pay a modest stipend that will help cover student expenses. Students will be asked to critically reflect through blogs, community supervisors will be asked to provide bi-weekly feedback and faculty mentors will be asked to Skype at a minimum of twice with the students and community supervisor. At least one on-site visitation will be conducted by a team from the Heartland Center
and UNL.

Fall Semester Reflection - Students who choose may enroll in the internship course Ag Lec 397 for up to three credit hours. This course encompasses the summer serviceship, student presentation and participation in the Rural Futures Conference.
