Omaha Press Club Foundation scholarships - app due Feb. 20

Journalism and AD/PR students, can you use a $2,500 scholarship? How about a $3,000 one? If so, enter these competitions by 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 20.

The Omaha Press Club Foundation this year will award competitive writing scholarships to three students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Creighton University or the University of Nebraska Omaha. If you have produced work, for publication or in class, that you believe could win, you should enter.

The details:

 The $3,000 Jim Denney Good News Scholarship will be awarded, in the words of the OPCF, to “a student who has shown aptitude for feature writing.” To apply, the student must submit three feature or news stories along with an OPC fact sheet. Each campus (UNL, UNO and Creighton) will choose one candidate for this competition.

 This year, for the first time, the OPCF is also offering two additional competitive scholarships, the Howard Silber Scholarships, each worth $2,500. Students need to present three news stories that they have submitted for a class or that have been published (online included), along with an OPC fact sheet.

The fine print: scholarship winners cannot graduate this May, but may graduate as soon as December 2015. They must be able to return to school in the fall because the prizes will be credited to their school financial accounts.

Entrants should get their materials to Joseph Weber by email, at josephweber@unl.edu, or in physical form, by Feb. 20. If you provide physical copies, please make sure they are appropriately mounted or in folders judges can easily handle. Entrants need to fill out OPC fact sheets, which he will provide. Contact him with any questions.
