The National Broadcasting Society Board of Governors voted University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications broadcasting student Benjamin A. Schoenkin as student governor to serve a one-semester term.
Schoenkin served on the NBS-AERho Student Advisory Board. It was through his involvement on this board that he was voted as a student governor. He is serving as one of two student governors.
“No matter when you get involved with NBS there’s always opportunities for leadership,” Schoenkin said. “I’m excited for the opportunity to communicate with other chapters across the country and share ideas and encourage them to get involved too.”
As student governor, Schoenkin is a part of weekly conference calls with the Board of Governors and helps organize the annual national conference, speakers and events. The student governors will also have leadership roles at the conference in Burbank, California.
Schoenkin is a junior double major in broadcasting and political science from Lincoln. He is currently a news intern at 1011 News and the co-president of UNL’s NBS-AERho chapter. Previously, he hosted a public affairs politics show on KRNU 2, the student radio station, and worked as a news reporter at the Daily Nebraskan, the student newspaper. Last summer, Schoenkin was an intern at Channel 8 News.
“This is an amazing opportunity for UNL to have a seat at the table of this national student association, which is going through some changes as it connects with the Broadcast Education Association and the National Association of Broadcasters. Benjamin is a great representative and already making an impact,” said Laurie Thomas Lee, broadcasting professor and UNL NBS-AERho chapter faculty adviser.
NBS-AERho’s mission statement is, “The National Broadcasting Society-Alpha Epsilon Rho enhances the development of college students preparing for careers in electronic media industries. NBS-AERho connects students with practicing professionals; emphasizes industry ethics, diversity, and inclusiveness; and promotes opportunities for excellence in leadership, community service, and production.”
