The Communications Assistant is a part-time position with an office located in Forestry Hall (adjacent to East Campus Union). The successful candidate will assist or lead a variety of digital and print projects aimed at increasing public awareness of the Nebraska Forest Service’s (NFS) programs, publications, initiatives, etc. The successful applicant should expect to work 10-15 hours per week and establish a set schedule of when s/he will be in the NFS office. This position is one of two student workers that reports to the Communications Specialist.

Throughout their tenure, s/he will gain marketable skills that can be leveraged to obtain natural resources employment following graduation. The successful candidate will also work with a diverse group of forestry professionals, furthering their knowledge of conservation and resource issues. Schedule and Wage: Flexible hours Monday – Friday, $10.00/hour
Summary of Duties:
• Develop print and digital publications related to NFS programs or outreach initiatives.
• Utilize Drupal content management system to edit or create NFS pages.
• Maintain social media presence according to NFS communications strategy.
• Create standardized template documents for use by NFS staff. (press releases, PowerPoint presentations, event
announcements, newsletters, etc.)
• Assist as needed on projects related to the organization’s communications strategy.
• Conduct research as needed for projects related to the organization’s communications strategy.
• Attend check-ins for new assignments and an evaluation of ongoing projects.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Demonstrated written and verbal proficiency, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.
• Completed or currently enrolled in courses related to marketing, journalism or environmental communications.
• Experience managing social media profiles.
• Working knowledge of Content Management Systems and web accessibility standards.
• Working knowledge of Adobe and Microsoft Office products.
• Experience developing new media content (short-length web videos, podcasts, social media campaigns).
• Demonstrated ability to multitask on projects with competing deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Previous work experience in the communications field (paid, internship and volunteer are acceptable).
• Working knowledge of AP style guidelines.
• Knowledge of natural resources issues pertaining to Nebraska.
