COJMC Offering Financial Awards – apply by April 15

The CoJMC is fortunate that many alumni and friends have provided scholarships and other aid to our students. Entries are due Friday, April 15 by 5 p.m. for the following awards:

Dana and Lynn Roper Sports Writing Competition
Applicants must be enrolled undergraduate or graduate students in CoJMC. To apply, students must submit copies or links to two published sports-related stories from the 2015 calendar year and a cover letter than includes contact information and the dates of publication. Winners will be selected based on reporting and writing quality in both stories, as well as the enterprising nature of the story ideas.
1st Place - $1,000, 2nd Place - $750, 3rd Place - $500, 4th Place - $250

George and Eva Grimes Memorial Fund
Applicants must be enrolled undergraduate or graduate students in CoJMC and be accepted to the 2016 Study Abroad program to Ireland. To apply, students must submit a resume and cover letter detailing how the funds will support their experience in Ireland.
Award - $1,000

Bud Pagel Writing Prize
Applicants must be enrolled undergraduates majoring in journalism. To apply, students must submit a resume and four reporting samples, a cover letter that includes a paragraph describing each example and what they are trying to accomplish. The winner will be selected based upon the quality of their reporting.
Award - $1,000

Jack Botts Editing Prize
Applicants must be enrolled undergraduates majoring in journalism. To apply, students must submit a resume and essay of no more than 1,000 words explaining the importance of editors and why editing matters in journalism. The winner will be selected based upon the use of proper AP style, grammar, spelling and word usage.
Award - $1,000

Spence Creative Writing Award
Applicants must be enrolled undergraduates in the college. To apply, students must submit a resume and an essay of no more than 1,000 words that describes how creative writing has benefitted his or her journalistic studies. The winner will be selected based upon the quality their writing.
Award - $1,000

Additionally, sometimes students accept unpaid or underpaid internships. The college is accepting applications for students who have obtaining internships during the summer of 2016. Entries are due by April 15 for the following internship awards:

Deb Fiddelke Internship Award
Qualified students will be advertising and public relations majors pursuing unpaid or underpaid internships. Preference will be given for out-of-state internships or to pursue international travel experiences. To apply, students must submit a cover letter, resume and letter of reference.
Award - $1,000

J. Steve Davis Jump Start Fund
Qualified students will be advertising and public relations majors pursuing internships in large metropolitan markets outside Nebraska. Preference will be given to students who come from Nebraska communities with populations under 25,000. To apply, students must submit a resume, cover letter and letter of reference.
Award - $500

Michael K. and Christie Nelson Dream Big Fund
Qualified students will be undergrad journalism majors who have been offered internships at top newspapers, magazines, websites or news services. The student must be enrolled in independent study or other credit hours under the terms of their internships. To apply, students must submit a resume, cover letter and letter of reference.
Award - $2,000

Scripps Howard Foundation Internship
Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students who have secured a summer internship of at least 10 weeks for 35 hours a week in one of five areas: multimedia, news producer, digital, entrepreneurship, social media/digital marketing sales. Internships may not be at a business that is a direct competitor of a Scripps operating unit (sites listed at http://www.scripps.com). To apply, students must submit a cover letter confirming the internship, a resume and letter of reference.
Award - $3,000 plus a possible $500 follow-up scholarship
