DEADLINE Approaching: 2015-16 William R. Reed Memorial Award, presented by the Big Ten Conference for Media Students

The 2015-16 William R. Reed Memorial Award, presented by the Big Ten Conference, deadline is Friday, May 6. The award is named for the late Big Ten Commissioner William “Bill” R. Reed. It is presented to the sports journalist from a Big Ten campus who, through his or her coverage during the most-recent academic year, “best exemplifies the spirit, ideals and dedication to the Big Ten and intercollegiate athletics which marked the life of Bill Reed.” The winner of the Reed Award will receive a check from the Big Ten for $1,000.

With the increased emphasis on campus to produce well-rounded student journalists that can excel in all areas, the Reed Award is open to all print, radio and/or television student media members.

Any member of a campus newspaper, television or radio sports staff is eligible to apply, provided he or she was enrolled at the university while covering the school during the most recent academic year.

Completed applications must include a minimum of three (maximum of four) stories, columns or features appearing via print, radio or television outlets. Print samples should be sent as links, printed versions of website articles or photocopies of print articles. Radio or television packages should be sent as links (original site or private YouTube links), and can include work with the BTN StudentU initiative. Applicants are welcome to submit samples from multiple media platforms (i.e. print, radio and television).

All completed applications must be returned to the Big Ten communications department by Friday, May 6. Each application must be signed by the school’s athletics communications director. This year’s winner will be announced the week of May 23.

Applications are available in the front office of Andersen Hall, 147.
