University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism & Mass Communications student Joseph McCarty earned a 2016 Dow Jones News Fund editing internship.
The senior journalism major from McCook is one of 97 applicants accepted for paid internships at 49 of the nation’s top news organizations. The News Fund received more than 900 applications for this summer’s program.
“This program is one of the most competitive and prestigious journalism internship opportunities in the country,” Associate Professor Sue Burzynski Bullard said. “Hiring editors often look at Dow Jones internships as a mark of excellence. This will give Joe a much-deserved boost when he’s looking for a job after graduation.”
McCarty will be a copy-editing intern at The Buffalo News. He has been a copy editor at the Daily Nebraskan and will be the copy chief this fall.
“McCarty worked hard to prepare for the Dow Jones test and application process,” Bullard said. “He is a journalism student who takes editing seriously. He’s committed to excellence in everything he edits.”
Dow Jones News Fund selects interns through a rigorous screening process, which includes a personal statement, references and a test, for its programs in data and digital journalism, business reporting and news editing.
CoJMC students have consistently been awarded Dow Jones internships. Some of the news organizations our Dow Jones interns have gone include The New York Times, The Denver Post and Journal Media Group, to name a few.
“We appreciate the commitment media organizations show to the future by hiring and training these bright and innovative interns through News Fund programs,” said Linda Shockley, News Fund managing director.
The summer internship program begins with a weeklong training at sites around the country before the students move on the news organization they were assigned for the 10-week paid internship. Students returning to college receive a $1,000 scholarship.
