Jacht, University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications’ student ad agency, took home a prestigious design award at the 2016 American Institute of Graphic Design Show on Saturday, Nov. 11 at KANEKO, an open space that nurtures and promotes creativity in the arts, sciences, and philosophy, in Omaha. Jacht was awarded bronze in Promotional Design & Advertising for their “Beyond the Field” campaign for the Nebraska Shrine Bowl.

“It’s exciting for us to win a design award, a highly competitive area of the advertising business,” said Dr. Amy Struthers, founder and director of Jacht. “Shrine Bowl is our longest, most loyal client. We’re so happy to contribute to their success.”

“Beyond the Field” is a campaign that draws attention to the bigger mission of the Shrine Bowl event, an all-star high school football game that takes place each summer in Kearney. The game is part of the Shriners’ work to fund their Children’s Hospitals, which provide care for severely injured or disabled children whose families may not be able to afford medical treatment.

Dr. Maria Marron, dean of the CoJMC said, “Jacht represents one of the many hands-on, real-world experiences that our program offers. It is great that our students have won this award, a recognition of the quality work they do on behalf of Shriners and all their clients."

The student team included the following Jacht members:

Art direction: Carlos Velasco
Design: Taylor Bogle
Photography: John Ficenec & Jenna Qualsett
Copy: Bailey Williams

Three judges from across the United States determined the award winners.

“I’m very happy for the entire Shrine Bowl team,” Velasco said. “AIGA showcases the best de-sign work in Nebraska so it’s a great place to recognize the hard work of Jachters.”

AIGA is the largest national organization for graphic design and similar arts.
