Public Relations Intern - District Communications, Omaha Public Schools

Position Function: The incumbent in this position is directly responsible to the Director of District Communications for implementing the district's strategic communications plan and providing overall support and direction in the marketing of, and communication about, the Omaha Public School District. The focus of the work is on the developing and enhancing the relationships and outcomes which support: an environment of mutual trust, two-way dialogue between the district and its internal and external patrons, the education needs of all OPS students, and positive community perceptions. The primary purpose of this position is to increase the positive communication being shared about OPS in the various media and communication sources.

Reports To: Director of District Communications

Work Schedule/FLSA Status: 8 hours per day (subject to change with notice) / nonexempt

Salary Schedule: $12/hour (includes full-time employee benefits)
(Position budgeted through Dec. 31, 2017; possible extension through May 31, 2018)

Essential Performance Responsibilities:

-Supports the overall communication strategy under the guidance of the Director of District Communications.
-Supports the Director of District Communications in responding to media requests
-Implement strategic marketing and communication plans for district initiatives.
-Implement marketing strategies for the promotion of district services, and oversee activities related to such marketing efforts.
-Assist with coordinating and/or oversee special events, innovative marketing programs and other community relations activities essential to the development of the district.
-Participate in district public relations activities including community events.
-Oversee the design and development of brochures, press releases, and other printed and electronic material in support of the division’s and district’s activities.
-Coordinate with Director of District Communication to improve communication between and among various internal employee groups.
-Assist staff who respond to media requests in developing key messages and talking points that support the overall district’s position.

Additional Duties: Assists with additional duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or designee.

Equipment: This position will require the ability to use basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine as well as video recording equipment and camera. Employees must always comply with OPS guidelines for equipment use.

Travel: This position will require frequent travel between schools and central offices. Occasional travel outside of Omaha or Nebraska will be required.

-Ability to travel in and outside of Omaha as requested
-Ability to correspond verbally and written at a high level
-Ability to represent OPS to community, media and governmental agencies

Interrelations:

-Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors and state/federal personnel.
-Will be working under the direct supervision of the Director of District Communication to complete day to day tasks.
-Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
-Must understand and respond appropriately to client needs and maintain a positive attitude with all clients and colleagues.
-Expected to interact with all internal and external stakeholders in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service.

Employee Punctuality and Appearance:

-In order for OPS to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has
received approved leave.
-Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee’s supervisor.
-All employees are required to report to work dressed in a professional manner that reflects a positive image of OPS and is appropriate for their position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

-Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Communications or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge
and abilities can be acquired is required.
-Excellent analytical and research skills.
-Outstanding project management skills.
-Ability to meet frequent and changing deadlines with a high attention to detail with the ability to multi-task.
-Ability to work independently, with minimum supervisory direction and to establish work priorities and follow-up actions required to meet strict deadlines and other requirements accurately and completely.
-Ability to communicate effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing, and to prepare marketing documents and press releases.
-Work collaboratively to create and effectively deliver information and instruction to staff.
-Must have advanced computer skills with experience using Microsoft Office products.
-Ability to respond quickly in a calm and professional manner to crisis situations and to represent the district’s stance in these situations in a creditable manner.
