National Geographic offers Young Explorers Grants to individuals ages 18 to 25 to pursue research, conservation, and exploration-related projects consistent with National Geographic's existing grant programs. Grant amounts range between US $2,000 and $5,000 at the maximum.

Natalia Ledford, a junior majoring in broadcasting and International Studies, did and she is using her grant on her newest film about Rwandan orphans. Co-director Emmanuel Habimana, a Rwandan orphan himself, and Ledford talk about their collaboration in an interview that aired June 25, 2011, on National Geographic Radio at http://is.gd/Qo7OB0. The film is about how Rwandan orphans are able to forgive those who killed their families during the genocide that occurred in that country.

Ledford wrote, directed and produced her first documentary during her senior year at Lincoln High School and debuted at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center in 2009. “Paths of the Displaced” profiles the lives of five of her high school peers who traveled from Sudan as refugees after being displaced by civil war.
