Communications Director, The Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs

The Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a self-motivated, mission-oriented professional to direct various aspects of internal and external communications for its newly-merged agency. The successful candidate will work independently to develop and recommend a strategic communication plan to senior leadership. The candidate will execute the plan in a manner that reflects positively on the NDVA, its employees and customers, the state and all other stakeholders. In addition to directing communications with the media, internal and external stakeholders, the Communications Director will be responsible for overseeing the development of an agency website and utilizing current technology to produce and distribute promotional materials and various other professional-quality documents. The successful candidate will work directly with the agency head and senior leadership to develop talking points, prepare remarks and other public presentations. Work also will include coordinating and executing public meetings in accordance with State of Nebraska Open Meetings laws, if applicable.

The salary range for this position is $22.433 – $32.490 per hour (effective July 1, 2017). Salary may be commensurate with applicant's education and experience, if approved by State Personnel, however current state employees will be subject to salary regulations set forth in the State of Nebraska Classified Personnel Rules and Regulations.

Qualifications / Requirements:

Bachelors degree in journalism, communications, public relations, advertising, creative writing or related field and three years related experience. Experience in developing, planning and managing public relations/publicity campaigns, mass media communication activities or public information programs may substitute for the education on a year for year basis.

OTHER: Valid driver's license or the ability to provide independent, authorized transportation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrated ability to build relationships and communicate missions and goals in a positive and professional manner to a variety of stakeholders; effective written and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently to create professional-quality promotional materials using modern technology; and the ability to develop, present and execute a strategic communications plan to senior leadership, the agency head and the Governor's Office.
