Welcome back

Dear Students,

I hope you all had an exciting, enjoyable summer vacation, a fulfilling internship or rewarding job opportunity.

I am delighted to welcome you back to the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, and I hope you are prepared for another year filled with new opportunities and the potential for great discovery and joy.

This year, I encourage you all to step outside of your comfort zone. Take on new responsibilities and adventures. You never know what may be in store for you if you are able to transcend the fear of failing and take the leap into the unknown.

Remember that you learn from your mistakes. Life involves failing as well as succeeding: Now is the time for you to try new things—to take that class that you had always feared, to talk with someone whom you wanted to get to know, to take on a leadership role in your volunteer organization, to try a new ethnic cuisine. . . .

We in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications want you to be successful, to grow and expand your horizons both academically and personally. We want you to avail of the many academic, social, cultural and sporting opportunities here at UNL.

We want you to be excited to be here and to come to class well prepared and eager to learn and engage with your fellow students and your professors. We want you to succeed.

We have some exciting opportunities and events planned for you in the College. You will learn about those opportunities and events throughout the semester via email and the electronic noticeboard in the foyer of Andersen Hall, so be sure to check periodically.

To kick off the semester, we are encouraging you to observe the total solar eclipse on campus Monday, Aug. 21, and are inviting you to an Ice Cream Social from 3:30 – 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22, in the Andersen Hall lobby. Make friends with fellow students, meet your professors and learn more about the organizations the College has to offer.

Please let me know if ever I can assist you in any way. I am here to help. My office is 139 Andersen Hall.

On behalf of the entire CoJMC faculty and staff, I wish you the very best in the 2017-2018 academic year.

Maria
