The CoJMC’s 2017-2018 National Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) Bateman Competition Team is seeking student team members. This is an opportunity for students to channel their best works for a real-world PR opportunity that allows them to research, plan, implement, evaluate and pitch their campaigns.

After students are accepted to the team, they will enroll in a zero-credit-hour course for the fall. Meeting times will be arranged at a later date. The first portion of the course begins Oct. 2 through early December and will focus on campaign research and strategy.

The second part of the course will require students to enroll in either ADPR339 or ADPR439 by permission, depending on which prerequisites the student holds at that time. Each of those courses will be worth three credit hours. The second portion of the course begins Jan. 8 through early May and will focus on creating campaign tactics, assessing overall campaign effectiveness and sending in a campaign pitch to PRSSA judges.

The theme of this year’s Bateman campaign will be “Do Good.” Previous Bateman campaigns have addressed social issues relevant to today, such as mental health, veterans, affordable housing, bullying and obesity. You can learn more about the Bateman Competition on the national PRSSA website at http://bit.ly/2wgqYLF.

In the first three years participating in competition, the CoJMC Bateman teams earned a third-place and top-honors as well as “Best of Show” and “Outstanding Strategy to Address a Problem” in the student division of PRSA Nebraska’s Paper Anvil Awards.

Students interesting in applying should visit http://journalism.unl.edu/do-good-campaign and submit a mini-PR plan based on the nonprofit scenario provided. The application due date is Sept. 13. Questions can be directed to professors Sheri Sallee and Phyllis Larsen at batemanUNL@gmail.com.
