CoJMC students are invited to attend an artist talk on Friday, Jan. 26, featuring award-winning photographer Jim Lommasson, who will discuss his latest collaborative photographic storytelling project, What We Carried: Lincoln, which tells the story of Yazidi refugees. The exhibit features photographs of cherished objects Yazidis brought with them on their journey to Lincoln and personal reflections written by the refugees.

The project can be viewed at https://whatwecarried.com/.

The Lincoln exhibit is a continuation of Lommasson’s ongoing project -- What We Carried What We Carried: Fragments from the Cradle of Civilization -- which has toured nationally. He began working with Yazidis in Lincoln last spring when the Sheldon Museum of Art displayed selections from his national show in its Conflict and Consequence: Photographing War and Its Aftermath exhibit.

Art historian Prudence Roberts said this about Lommasson’s work: “In these dark and divisive times, Lommasson’s art quietly, yet firmly, breaks down barriers of misunderstanding and gives voice to people who have been silenced.”

Lommasson’s exhibit will be on display at the Nebraska History Museum through May 25.
