Paige Cornwell, of Leawood, Kan., gave a talk titled, "From a few cents to thousands of rupees: How Lincoln helped rebuild a community," on Nov. 10.

Cornwell, who is a junior studying journalism at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, described her experiences in Sri Lanka this past summer and showed how Lincolnites’ $100,000 donation contributed to the tsunami relief effort. An undersea earthquake in the Indian Ocean struck Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand in 2004.

TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission – “ideas worth spreading.” The theme for the Nov. 10 event was “Bringing Nebraska to the World: Innovation on the Prairie.” TEDx Lincoln featured 15 speakers and two videos.

Following the live event, TEDx hosted a public reception in the Jasmine Room at The Grand Manse at 129 N. 10th St. in downtown Lincoln.

Cornwell is a Lincoln Journal Star reporting intern and was member of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications’ immigration depth reporting class in spring 2011. Last year she reported from Cambodia. In May 2011 Cornwell participated in a study abroad trip to Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore.

TEDs format consists of short prepared talks, demonstrations and performances (live, or just TEDTalks videos from TED.com) on a wide range of subjects to foster learning, inspiration and wonder – and to provoke conversations that matter.
