The Chinook Observer, 2018 winner of the news industry’s statewide public service award, seeks a reporter with curiosity, courage, ambition, objectivity and a sincere commitment to customer service. We believe in tough, independent news coverage — but we also relish telling fun stories about our awe-inspiring, hardworking readers. Their interests are our interests.
A successful candidate for this full-time job will be motivated and productive, with a passion for ferreting out unique stories in this astonishingly newsy place. Especially welcome are expressions of interest in covering the environment, natural resources and science — though by necessity everyone on our news staff eventually covers everything. We value great photography, breaking online news and video — plan to polish all these skills with us.
Job requirements include a minimum of a bachelor’s degree (though it need not be in journalism), demonstrated long-term experience in non-fiction writing on deadline, a clean driving record and a commitment to small-town life. Reporters are expected to produce around three full-length stories per week, plus smaller news items. Based in our downtown Long Beach facility, this hire like all of our employees will be expected to help answer phones and perform other light office functions.
Compensation starts at $32,000 a year, with more possible depending on experience. Benefits include Paid Time Off (PTO), a range of insurance and a 401(k)/Roth 401(k) retirement plan. Send clips, resume and letter of interest to hr@eomediagroup.com.
