If you participate, you will come into the lab (located in the East Stadium building on UNL campus) for a single 2.5 hour session. Please schedule a session when you are not menstruating (not on your period).
During lab sessions, you would:
- Complete a standard urine test for pregnancy.
- Provide a sample of your blood from your fingertip using a lancet (like the devices used by diabetics to test their blood sugars).
- Watch a sexual film and self-stimulate with a vibrator alone in a private room. During the film, your vaginal arousal and heart rate would be measured from another room. This will include using a vaginal photoplethysmograph, a small, tampon shaped device that will measure your vaginal blood flow. The researcher will show you the device and answer any questions you have about using it, but you will insert and remove the device yourself in a private, locked room. This device is sterilized prior to each use using the same procedures as for other gynecologic medical equipment (such as an ultrasound). You will be provided with a small new-in-packaging vibrator to use during the film (and can keep this vibrator after the session is over).
- Before and after the film, you will provide samples of your saliva (by spitting into a plastic tube) and vaginal fluid (by self-inserting a menstrual cup, like this one).
- After the film you will fill out some surveys on a laptop about your stress levels, mood, mental health, sexuality, and demographics.
- You will complete an interview with a trained researcher about your current sexual functioning.
- Finally, you will have your blood pressure measured with a cuff on your arm.
