Moisture Meters and How to Use Them

While some locations in our state are hoping for rain, other areas have had heavy rainfall with more to come. Recently, a homeowner from the Albion area reached out for help because their basement was damaged from flash flooding.

In 2019, Nebraska Extension distributed moisture meters to Extension offices across the state impacted by floods. Moisture meters could then be checked out by local residents needing to make decision about the timing of home repairs.

We have added resources on using the moisture meters and understanding mold growth to the Disaster Education website. Go to https://disaster.unl.edu/employee-resources to find:

• Use Moisture Meters to Determine When Structures are Dried Out and Ready for Rebuilding (English and Spanish languages)
• Mold Growth – Cleaning Up Flood Damaged Homes (this is a recording of an internal webinar for Nebraska Extension)

If your office does not have access to a moisture meter, reach out to Soni Cochran at scochran2@unl.edu. There may be an office in your area that is able to share their meter(s) with you.
