Did you know Nebraska is home to over 20,000 miles of hazardous liquid and natural gas pipelines? According to the Nebraska Pipeline Association, these 20,090 miles of large- and small-diameter pipelines quietly deliver energy products to communities across our state.

While pipelines are generally a safe method of transporting energy, incidents can occur—and when they do, the risks to public safety and the environment can be significant.

As Extension professionals, we can play a key supporting role in community safety and preparedness. One way to engage is by attending an upcoming Pipeline Safety Meeting/Exercise, hosted by the Nebraska Pipeline Association and scheduled at various locations across the state. These sessions are free to attend.

You'll gain valuable insight from industry experts and local first responders about Nebraska’s pipeline network—and what happens during a pipeline incident. The tabletop exercises also offer a great opportunity to reflect on Extension’s role in these events. While we are not first responders, consider how we might support community communication, education, or coordination in the event of an incident?

Participation also opens the door for meaningful connections with those involved in pipeline safety, emergency planning, and disaster response at the local level.
