Introduction to Unmanned Aircraft: Extension In-service

Please consider this invitation to join an Extension In-service on the topic of unmanned aircraft systems. The in-service workshops will be held this fall, at 5 locations across Nebraska, and is exclusively for Extension Faculty and Staff. A team of individuals with aviation and unmanned aircraft expertise will deliver the in-service education. Additional information on the in-service sessions, instructors, a program flyer, and registration instructions can be found at http://nuaire.unl.edu. Additional information can also be found below.

Goal: The goal of this Extension In-service is to increase the capacity of Extension Faculty and Staff in their understanding of unmanned aircraft systems. Primary topics will include: 1) introduction to aviation and the National Air Space, 2) types of unmanned aircraft and potential applications, 3) current regulatory status of flying unmanned aircraft, and 4) “hands on” flight opportunity.

Outcomes: As a result of attending the in-service workshops, attendees will have: 1) a better understanding of aviation and the National Air Space, 2) an appreciation for the diversity of unmanned aircraft types and advantages/disadvantages of different airframes, 3) a better understanding of the current regulations governing use of unmanned aircraft, and 4) a flight experience that helps convey the essence of unmanned aircraft flight.

Motivation: Advances in unmanned aircraft systems combined with next generation sensors will contribute to the challenge of feeding our future world in a sustainable manner. Farmers and crop scouts will find using unmanned aircraft outfitted with advanced imaging sensors beneficial in locating problem areas in fields, such as weeds, water stress, insect stress, and crop stress. These in-service education opportunities will help you understand more about the potential of unmanned aircraft systems in agriculture and natural resources.
