Field day covers weed control options and cover crop research

A total of 165 participants including growers, crop consultants, extension educators, graduate students, industry representatives and other ag clientele, attended the 2017 Nebraska Extension Weed Management and Cover Crops Field Day, June 28 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln South Central Agricultural Laboratory near Clay Center, Nebraska. Amit Jhala, agronomy and horticulture assistant professor and Nebraska Extension weed management specialist, and Roger Elmore, agronomy and horticulture professor and Nebraska Extension cropping systems specialist, organized and led the tour.

The Nebraska Weed Science team members demonstrated several research projects for weed control in corn, soybean, sorghum and popcorn that included efficacy, crop safety and comparison of several new herbicides such as Resicore, Acuron Flexi, Fierce XLT, DiFlexx DUO, Armezon PRO, Zidua PRO and Warrant Ultra.

Weed control and crop safety in multiple herbicide-tolerant crop technologies were presented. This included Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybean (dicamba-tolerant), Balance Bean (isoxaflutole-tolerant) and INZEN sorghum (nocosulfuron tolerant).

Several herbicide programs were compared for weed control in corn and soybean in the university’s unbiased comparison trials. Stevan Knezevic, agronomy and horticulture professor and integrated weed management specialist, discussed timing of weed control affected by pre-emergence residual herbicide in soybean. Melinda Yerka, former Nebraska research assistant professor, demonstrated weed control in INZEN sorghum. Robert Klein, emeritus professor and Nebraska Extension cropping system specialist, discussed factors that can affect off-target movement from new dicamba herbicide formulations. Postdoctoral scientists Debalin Sarangi and Zahoor Ganie and graduate students Ethann Barnes, Jacob Ziggafoos and Parminder Chahal, demonstrated research projects on various aspects of weed control.

Cover crops projects were presented by Elmore, leader of several cover crops projects funded by the Nebraska Corn and Soybean Board, Chris Proctor, Nebraska Extension weed science educator, and graduate student Angela Bastidas. They demonstrated cover crops research in corn and soybean systems including planting dates, plant populations and maturities.

“We thank Irvin Schleufer, Caleb Wilford, Sharon Hachtel, Brianna Schuck and the graduate students for their help with maintaining research projects and organizing the field day,” Jhala said. “And, we also thank Nebraska Extension Educators Jenny Rees, Ron Seymour, Steven Melvin and Tood Whitney for promoting the field day and the South Central Ag Lab staff and summer students for their assistance.”
